Thank you for visiting the AfroSolo website. We are very excited about our 17th annual AfroSolo Arts Festival. Our theme is PEACE with the title: UNITED IN PEACE: ARTISTS, CLERGY, LEGISLATORS AND COMMUNITY. This title reflects our desire to include the whole community in our quest for peace.
We will use the performing and visual arts among other programming to promote and celebrate peace. Since PEACE is a universal aspiration, we are broadening our focus beyond the Black experience and welcoming artists from the greater community to go on this journey with us. Through United in Peace we aim to inform, uplift and inspire all of us to build bridges that unite all people.
Unite in Peace . . . will take place from July 29th to October 15th in five venues throughout San Francisco. The kick-off event on July 29th is our first collaboration with the Commonwealth Club of California. We with have a panel discussion entitled: The Arts: A Medium for Peace examining the role the arts have played in peace making in the past with a vision of its role in the future.
The centerpiece events of the festival will be throughout our Weekend for Peace, Friday, August 6th through Sunday, August 8th. The weekend includes the following:
- The 9th annual Free Jazz in the Gardens concert on August 7th, in the Yerba Buena Gardens. The concert, in collaboration with the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, will feature Nat Courtney leading the The Junius Courtney Big Band. Sharing the stage will be San Francisco's noted jazz vocalist Denise Perrier.
- We have a goal of inspiring the greater community to get truly involved in the Festival this year. Through politicians, the clergy, you and our artists we want to spread peace. For the August 6th to 8th weekend we want as many people as possible to commit acts of peace and kindness (such as saying a prayer, lighting a candle, meditation, calling a friend, having a moment of silence, making the apology that's been planned, etc). We are grateful for the Declarations of Peace received from our political leaders and agreements from the Faith Based Community to join our efforts.
- Festival Gala - Performance for Peace at the African American Art & Culture Complex We will produce a cross-cultural and intercultural performance extravaganza featuring theater, dance and music. The event will be centered on highlighting compassion, joy, and peace. There will be an exquisite reception following performances.
The festival will include Peace: Visual Artists Leading the Way, a multi media arts exhibit in the Main San Francisco Public Library; a Youth For Peace performance in the African American Art and Culture Complex; and our United In Health Community Health Fair at the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center and a scholarly symposium.
All the events are free to the public, except the panel at the Commonwealth Club and Gala Performance.
I will see you at the Festival,
Thomas Robert Simpson
Founder/Artistic Director
AfroSolo's mission is to nurture, promote, and present African American and African Diasporan art and culture through solo performances and the visual and literary arts. Since 1993, we have provided a forum to give an authentic voice to the diverse experiences of Black people. Through art, we bring people of all ethnicities together to explore and share the human spirit that binds us all.
