AfroSolo Arts Festival 2016 kicks off with a jazz concert in collaboration with Yerba Buena Gardens Festival. This will be our sixtieth annual free concert in Yerba Buena Gardens. It is relevant that we began our festival with a concert. Music, being a fundamental element of the Black experience, fits perfectly with our theme "BLACK MATTERS". Bring a lunch, a blanket and enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music.
Tammy L. Hall
Born and raised in Dallas, Tammy L. Hall started playing the piano at the age of four and continued playing at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. By the age of 8 she was studying classical music and soaking up the sounds around her, absorbing influences such as Stevie Wonder, Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones and Oscar Peterson.
Hall made her conducting debut with the National Symphony of Turkmenistan, touring with Amikaeyla Gaston and Broadway Bound. She has performed with Connie Champagne, Mary Wilson, Regina Carter, Houston Person, Marcus Shelby, Kim Nalley, Linda Tillery and the late Etta Jones among others.
This program is Hall's first appearance as an AfroSolo Arts Festival featured artist. She is accompanied by bassist Gary Brown and drummer Daszon Claiborne.
Making a special appearance with Hall will be scholar/educator and poet Arisa White, scholar and poet Amber McZeal and spoken word artist Tammy VaiTai. Singer and songwriter Derek Lassiter will also perform with Hall.

Linda Kay Ricketts
AfroSolo is proud to present emerging vocalist Linda Kay Ricketts. With roots deep in the music of the African American tradition, her unique blend of gospel, spirituals, jazz and blues is the perfect complement to her rich contralto voice. Ricketts is fast becoming one of the Bay Area's favorite vocalist.
No stranger to the stage or the studio, Ricketts has performed with such greats as the late Ed Kelly, Calvin Keys, Robert Stewart, Ricardo Scales, Linda Rhondstadt, OIGC, Bill Bell, John Turk and blues artist Rhonda Benin. She was also a featured artist at San Rafael's Throckmorton Theatre.
Ricketts is a crowd pleaser and routinely plays throughout the Greater Bay Area. She has also performed on stages in other U.S. cities, as well as in South America, France and Africa. In 2012 she performed at Carnegie Hall with a chorus directed by composer/arranger, Jacqui Hairston, and in 2014 was the featured artist at Napa Valley's Black Coyote Winery. Ricketts December 2015 Concert at the Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland was a holiday favorite.
She will be accompanied by Calvin Keys on guitar, George Spencer on keyboards, Leon Joyce on drums and Mark Williams on bass.
